Seiko Neovintage JDM Rare Style - 5G23-6020 circa November 1996
This JDM Seiko invites curiosity. The brushed stainless steel case paired with integrated bracelet immediately differentiates it from the brands more recognisable silhouettes. The stark white dial with blue chapter ring draws attention to the placed text at 6 o’clock, ‘3650 Lithium Operate’ which is cryptic in its meaning.
Like many of the models favoured by myself and presented for your consideration, this model was an experiment. The experiment placed a unique movement, calibre 5G23, into this lovely case to demonstrate the manufacturers ability to make a watch with a ten year battery life. The experiment was a success, and boasted about on the dial with the number of days in ten years featured.
A skeptic could argue that a movement used once in an obscure model from the middle 90’s is hardly a reflection of success but I think that the mere fact that these watches were released to the public rather than kept merely as ‘proof of concept’ by Seiko R&D is a testament to the brands confidence.
